Resoling FAQ's

What Kind of Rubber Should I get For my Shoes?

We are happy to discuss the options of rubber compounds for your climbing shoes or help with choosing the best pattern for your trail or other shoes. Typically, we will try to select the rubber that best suits the shoe to make it closest to factory performance but we are happy to provide a more custom option. We almost exclusively use Vibram rubber here at SJR whether that is for a climbing shoe, trail runner, or other.

Some of our favorite patterns for trail shoes are listed here as well as information on the two main types of climbing shoe rubber we use: Vibram XS Edge and Vibram XS Grip2.

I'm not sure which resoling type I need for my shoes

No worries! We do not expect you to be aware of the lingo of shoe repair and resoling and are more than happy to walk you through the offerings we have as well as suggest the most appropriate repair to your footwear once they are in hand, in the shop. We do suggest that you check out the When to Resole? page on the site to see photos of the types of repairs and shoe eligibility. Our Resole Your Shoes page walks through many of the standard repairs that we do and may offer some quick answers to your questions. That said, please reach out to the cobbler at sanjuanresole@gmail.com with inquiries and questions on what may be the best action to take in order to keep your shoes going the distance.

What is the turnaround time for repairs/resoling?

We strive to get your shoes back in your hands and in action within 1-3 weeks upon arrival at the shop. While this is dependent on current order volume, this timeline is what we typically adhere to. If the cobbler is out of the shop for an extended period of time with travel, it will be made known upon order request and/or within email notification and social post.

Can I resole just one shoe?

While this is technically a possibility, this is strongly discouraged as it will change the performance of the footwear as a pair. It is very advantageous to have your shoes wear out at the same rate and be repaired at the same level in order to have the performance and longevity that is closest to that of brand new, factory production. It will be a noticeable difference and disadvantage to repair just one shoe in a pair even if it does seem that only one shoe is worn and the other is still acceptable.

What are the Benefits of resoling?

There are 3 main reasons why resoling your shoes is a great idea. Number one, you save a lot of money and increase the longevity of your footwear without a hefty cost for a new pair. Especially with the increase in tariff charges internationally and the price of production across all brands, the cost of footwear is increasing substantially each year. It is hard to find climbing shoes for example for less that a $200 price tag whereas you can get your shoes resoled and back in action for typically around $70. The second reason, and this is especially true for climbing shoes, is that it takes time for your shoes to properly break in and conform perfectly to your foot shape. What resoling your shoes allows for a nicely broken-in upper that is very comfortable with a sole that is like-new. This allows for top performance and top comfort– a win win! Lastly, it is much more sustainable in nature to repair footwear rather than just tossing your shoes in the landfill once the outsole is cooked. It is a step towards a more conscious consumerism mindset that is a way to advocate for change with your dollar. Synthetic materials are already quite harmful during production and the amount of waste that is produced during footwear production is substantial. By resoling and repairing your footwear to last additional time, you are being a steward to the wild places that bring us the utmost inspiration, meaning, and joy.

Do you work on other shoes other than running shoes, climbing shoes, and Birkenstocks?

This short answer is, yes! That said, we are a young company here at SJR and are constantly working on widening our offerings. We ask that if it is a different type of footwear that you personally reach out to us at sanjuanresole@gmail.com so we are able to discuss possibilities. We thank you for your understanding as we continue to grow and look forward to continuing to provide a broader offering of footwear services.

Do you work on La Sportiva no edge Shoe models?

At this time, we are not repairing La Sportiva No Edge models including the Futura, Mantra, Mandala, and Genius. This is something we hope to offer in the future as we work towards a certification and partnership with La Sportiva that offers the necessary certified brand parts that are required for this type of repair to be done appropriately and with the utmost quality.
